We are proud to be a part of the Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church. We are pleased to share the beautiful gift God has given us in Potosi Pines Camp.
A big part of our ministry is to the children and youth of Las Vegas and the surrounding area. We have program goals that we follow, so that all that come to this camp will feel their lives have been renewed!
Potosi Program Goals:
1. We will work to insure campers are: physically and emotionally safe, have fun, and feel comfortable being who God created them to be.
2. We will work to build confidence and leadership skills in all who participate in our programs.
3. We will work to create a Christian community were all feel safe and loved by God. 4. We will work to build appreciation of God's creation and encourage all be active in its care.
Come sit on our porch: enjoy the beautiful desert surroundings and feel your life being renewed!!
Children's Sunday School is Sunday @ 9:30am
Kid's Prayer Connection is Sunday @ 11:00am
Desert Spring uses a wonderful rotation model Sunday School at the 9:30am hour.
Kids' Prayer Connection is available at the 11:00am hour.
Sunday School is a wonderful engaging time for the kids to discuss the scripture and message. Teachers lovingly answer questions such as: How does that scripture apply in today’s world? Is God saying something to ME in this scripture? Teachers offer activities, games, or crafts to enhance the understanding of the scripture while engaging the children in learning fun. Desert Spring Children's Ministries encourages families to incorporate scripture study and prayer into their daily activities.
Teachers are needed for the 9:30am and 11:00am hour. Please contact the church office if you are interested in helping.
Nursery, Toddlers & Pre-School are offered Sunday @ 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am
Sunday mornings the nursery receives babies from newborn – 18 months.
The Toddler Room receives toddlers from 18 months - 36 months.
The pre-school room receives pre-schoolers ages 3 - 5 years.
The children are cherished as teachers play and repeat a special word for each month such as Jesus, Holy Spirit, and Forgive. The children gain a “hearing” vocabulary which is shown to later offer comfort to kids as they hear and learn these words later in life. Parents are offered weekly curriculum with playtime suggestions for introducing faith foundations at home.
Desert Spring is building an outdoor park/playground for our families. It will occupy the current rectangle of grass outside the Sanctuary (shown left).
There will be tricycles with a path, climbing structures, a play house, and fun musical instruments. There will also be an area for adults to relax and watch their kids play.
We hope to have this completed by fall of 2017. Stay tuned for updates!
Reading with Rascal is a therapy dog reading program. People of all ages participate in our program. Children of reading age bring a few of their favorite books and find it fun and challenging to read to our dogs while the younger children listen, run around and play.
The children see that our dogs are nonjudgmental so they feel very comfortable reading to them. Dogs listen attentively while allowing children to read at their own pace. A child’s success in school depends on great reading skills and this is the perfect place for the child to accomplish this.
Adults relax, enjoy the children and dogs. We serve refreshments and have handouts for the children. We generally have 10 to 20 therapy dog volunteer teams at each session. In 2015 we had an average 23 children participate in our reading programs.
Reading with Rascal dogs are registered through many national organizations. To name a few: Alliance of Therapy Dogs; Michael’s Angel Paws; Independent Therapy Dogs, Inc.; etc.
Handlers bring their dogs to Reading with Rascal; find an area to put down a blanket for the dogs and the kids and wait for the children to come to them. It’s a fun morning. This program is sponsored by Desert Spring United Methodist Church; however, NO CHURCH AFFILIATION IS NECESSARY to participate! Reading with Rascal is free. Refreshments are served and handouts of a variety of toys, trinkets, are given to the children.
Acolytes are young people who assist with worship services.
They light the candles at the beginning of the 8:00am and 9:30am services, shake hands with worshipers during the greeting, help collect the offering during the 8:00am service, assist with communion (with their parents' permission), and extinguish the candles at the end of the service.
During the 8:00am service, acolytes remain in the sanctuary. Most of the 9:30am service is spent in Children's Sunday school.
Each month, a schedule is prepared for the acolytes. Changes are made as needed to fit family plans, vacations, etc.
As a convenience to the family, if two or more acolytes are in the same family, they will be scheduled to serve together unless the parents request otherwise.
If you have any questions or if your child would like to serve, please e-mail Sally Rogers at CandSRogers@yahoo.com
