Mission trip opportunity to Ft. Yuma

For many of us, it has been a long mission trip dry spell during the COVID pandemic.

Here is an opportunity to get back in the game – brief, inexpensive, close, practical, realistic, and helpful, with delightful hosts.

Ft. Yuma UMC in Winterhaven, CA (across the Colorado River from Yuma, Az) is a Spanish language congregation meeting in an old campus in disrepair. The church has a ministry history of more than a hundred years.

Pastor Manuel Jimenez, on-staff in Yuma churches, along with experienced missional consultants, has identified three realistic and effective tasks – making the Sanctuary usable, the Fellowship Hall, kitchen, and restrooms usable, and making a large Sunday School room usable. (The campus has five buildings – work will be limited to only two.)

There will be plenty of work for all skill and experience levels, from construction/drywall repairs to replacing doors and door locks and freeing up windows to installing pigeon spikes and replacing missing floor tiles. The kitchen and restroom/showers need attention. There will be plenty of general cleaning and some sorting and disposal. After all, a hundred years of use results in lots of needs.

The dates are Thursday, January 19 – Sunday, January 22, 2023. Volunteers can participate on any or all of those dates. Overnight (air mattress/cot) housing is available at Trinity UMC – Yuma, which has a long history of mission involvement. Some people may prefer to stay at a Yuma area hotel/motel.
