“Trials & Firm Foundations”
Scripture Reading – Matthew 7:24-27
“Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn’t fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. But everybody who hears these words of mine and doesn’t put them into practice will be like a fool who built a house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It fell and was completely destroyed.”
This passage reminds us of a reality we know all too well, we will experience storms in life. In this passage it is important to notice that both of the people who heard Jesus’ words experienced the same trials: both of them had rain; both of them had floods, and both of them had winds. We know as Christians, that we are going to experience storms, being a follower of Jesus does not exempt us from the storms of life.
Jesus’ teaching story recognizes this and offers us two examples to consider. It is important to recognize here that both builders heard the words of Jesus. The difference between the two builders is not that one of them decided to come and listen to Jesus’ teaching and the other did not. The difference between the builders is that one put into practice what they heard and the other did not.
Jesus’ words only become the bedrock of our lives if we build our lives upon them by hearing and doing what Jesus’ teaches. This is an important reminder for all of us who follow Jesus.
God Bless You
