Pastor David’s Devotional
“Pentecost – The Holy Spirit Given to Us”
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
This coming Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter, and it corresponds to the Jewish celebration of Shavuot, celebrated on the 50th day after the second day of Passover. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah to the people of God on Mount Sanai. The Christian celebration of Pentecost is always on the 50th day after Easter Sunday. Pentecost celebrates the giving of the Holy Spirit to the people of God.
In the story of the day of Pentecost, found in Acts chapter 2, the disciples were in a room waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus had promised shortly before his ascension into heaven. When the day of Pentecost arrived, the scriptures tell us the room filled with wind and the Holy Spirit rested upon the disciples like “tongues of fire” giving them power to proclaim the Word of God—Jesus, the Word made flesh. The Book of Acts goes on to report how, from that moment on, the disciples boldly proclaimed Jesus Christ and many people came to believe. In other words, the Book of Acts is the story of the work of the Holy Spirit through the lives of faithful people, giving birth to the church!
Desert Spring was born 30 years ago. Rev. Ed Ramsey and a group of just a few faithful followers of Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, boldly stepped out in faith, proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Their proclamation bore much fruit, as now (30 years later) Desert Spring is a strong and powerful witness to the community and beyond.
The same Holy Spirit that indwelled the disciples 2000 years ago, the same Holy Spirit that worked through Rev Ramsey and the handful of faithful disciples, giving birth to our church, is the Holy Spirit at work in our lives today. And just as was the case with the disciples of long ago, the Holy Spirit gives us power to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ!
At Desert Spring, we proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ in many ways. We proclaim Jesus in words spoken through preaching and teaching, as well as in conversations and discussions with one another. We also proclaim Jesus in our actions–through acts of love and the many ways we help to meet the needs of the community and beyond. Because of the presence of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives, and in our church, our proclamation has the power to impact people’s lives in life giving ways. We could write our own book of the acts of the Holy Spirit over the past 30 years and the many stories of people’s lives being transformed! Maybe your story would be in the book?
Who first shared the Good News of Jesus Christ with you? Whether it was through a church or individual, that proclamation had power—the power to impact your life. Take a moment to give thanks to God!
God bless you and I hope to see you in church.
