Pastor Tim’s Devotion – Counting Your Blessings

Scripture Reading — Psalm 136:1 (NRSV)

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Psalm 136 was written to be used in worship. It is a call-and-response. The first half of each verse names a work of God in creation and history, and the second half of each verse, expresses thanksgiving for that work, recognizing God’s love as its source, and praising God over and over again with the refrain, “his steadfast love endures forever!”

In other words, Psalm 136 was written to remind us to count our blessings. To remind us to take stock of the gifts that God has given us.

For what are you thankful today?

I am thankful that God is good. I am thankful for the gift of life. I am thankful for the love of my creator and for the many wonders of the creation. I am thankful for the gift of relationships. I am thankful for you and for the many gifts of this blessed community of grace. I am thankful for the many ways that the Lord has delivered me throughout my life. I am thankful that God is the God of the second chance. I am thankful that God has never given up on me, even when I have given up on myself. I am thankful that Jesus came to find me in the darkness and that he led me home. I am thankful…

I give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Psalm 136 was meant to be sung in community. Will you join me in counting your blessings? For what are you thankful for today?

O give thanks to the Lord, for __________, for his steadfast love endures forever.

God Bless You!
