Creation Tells of God – Pastor David’s Devotional for June 9, 2021

Today’s devotional is a reprint of one I wrote in May 2020. I hope it is just as meaningful today as it was a year ago. Pastor Dave

“Creation Tells Of God”

Romans 1:20

Ever since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—God’s eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, because they are understood through the things God has made.

Recently, I have been spending more time than usual working from home.  Often, I start my workday in our back yard checking emails and writing my devotionals.  Today is no exception.

As many of you know, gardening has been a hobby of mine. My hobby has included planting many flowering plants, and today (as I write this devotional) I am surrounded by flowers.  The butterfly Irises are in full bloom with beautiful yellow flowers.  There are purple flowers adorning our sage and chives in the herb gardens.  The sweet alyssum, with its delicate white flowers, is in its prime.  Our climbing rose is covered with red flowers.  And, the air is filled with the scent of the star jasmine prolific with flowers.  It is a gorgeous morning to be sitting in the backyard working.

With such beauty around me, I am reminded of Romans 1:20.  In Romans 1:20 St. Paul reminds us of something we all know: creation gives witness to the Creator.  This is most obvious in places where the majesty and beauty of creation overwhelms us.  I think of the beautiful red rock canyons of Zion National Park, or of the water falls outside of Telluride Colorado, or the rugged coastline of Big Sur and how time spent in those places made me all the more aware of the presence and power and beauty of God.  How about you?  Can you think of times and places where the beauty and majesty of creation filled you with awe and wonder?

Of course, we don’t have to travel to Zion or the Rockies or the beach to have such an experience.  We are surrounded by creation right now.  All around us creation is giving witness to the Creator.  Trees are leafed out.  Birds are singing.  Flowers are blooming.  In the distance I hear people talking.  God created it all!  And all of what God created gives witness to the Creator.  For me, the flowers and trees give witness to the beauty of God, and how God loves diversity.  The mountains in the distance give witness to the majesty and power of God who is our rock upon whom we stand.  The birds singing reminds me of how all of creation sings praise to God.  And the people nearby talking and laughing are created in the very image of our Creator.

Today, I invite you to take a moment or two to look outside at creation, and to ask yourself a simple question: What does this part of creation tell me about God our creator?  The more mindful we are of what creation tells us about God, the more aware we become of the presence of God in our lives and all that means.

God bless you and enjoy this beautiful day!
