Scripture Reading — Ephesians 4:15b-16

Growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

I first visited Desert Spring UMC at the end of 2011. At that time in my life I was really struggling. I felt battered and bruised by the world. My sense of self-worth was at an all-time low. I was questioning every aspect of my life, including my faith, and I had a growing sense that my life didn’t matter.

The people of Desert Spring welcomed me with compassion and kindness. They made time to sit with me and to listen to me. They invited me to join them in their ministries, helping and serving others. They helped me to see my God given passions and gifts, and they encouraged me to use them in service to God. In this grace-filled community I found healing and a renewed sense of purpose. I came to remember what the world had caused me to doubt, that I mattered to God, and that I was loved.

Christian community is a gift to us from God in Jesus Christ. All who follow Jesus make up the body of Christ. Christ is our head, and in his strength the body grows and builds itself up in love. Each and every one of us is a vital part of the body, and each of us has special work to do. You matter to God, and you matter to the people around you. Your gifts, abilities, and presence make a difference to your community, and they make a difference to God!
